Peabody Institute Library’s history is firmly rooted in the legacy of giving
In 1852, George Peabody gifted a $20,000 commitment to the citizens of Peabody for the creation of a library with two stipulations: it be free to everyone and that it have a lyceum.
The Main Library, which opened in 1854, is the oldest public library in the United States to operate continuously from the same location and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The PIL Foundation is dedicated to continuing the legacy of giving that has been at the heart of the Library’s history. Join us in supporting our mission and help us make a difference in the lives of the residents of Peabody that George Peabody may never have imagined!
